Wellington Waterfront 5k, Summer Series - Race 17, Queens Wharf, 24 February 2009

Another great night weather-wise tonight for the 59 participants. This resulted in nearly a third of the field posting significant achievements with 7 Lifetime PBs and 12 SPBs. Well done everyone!

Walkers:  Andrew Shelley continued to race walk at sub-30 minute pace when he walked solo to win this evening’s race in 29:09. He is in a great vein of form. Second male was Ian Morton, with a return to the 5k series (and race walking for that matter) with a time of 32:41 with third place going to Geoff Iremonger in a SPB time of 33:58. Fastest woman tonight was Frances LeFort, also in a SPB time, of 34:49. Second place went to Carol Briesman in 36:47 and third placing to Daphne Jones in 38:25.

Runners:  With lower numbers tonight, I did predict (pre the race start) that the winning time would be 17 minutes something. What I did not know was that in our midst was an out-of-town elite athlete (from Whangarei I gather) who has had significant Top 10 results within National Multisports, Cycling and Triathlon events over the past couple of season. After that build-up, I am pleased to declare Katherine Anton the overall winner of this evening’s Wellington Waterfront 5k race with a time of 17:28. Just a few metres back was the first male home, Tim Rickerby. Tim’s time was a Lifetime PB of 17:32 so he was no doubt pleased with his efforts. Second male was Bernard Smith in 17:54 and third place went to Michael Walton, choosing tonight to run instead of race walk, and posting a SPB time of 17:57. Second woman home tonight was Susan Joy, who also ran a Lifetime PB of 20:55 and third went to Karyn McLean in a SPB time of 21:24.

A big thanks to tonight’s officials – Dan Powell, Bruce Perry, Christine Jones and Lotty Turnidge.

Spot prizes went to: Kim Norton, Sarah Jones, Colin Price, Richard Woodward, Jonathan Easthope, Carol Briesman and Colleen Singleton – congratulations to all.

Don’t forget – note down our next 10k option for 17 March 2009 and also pencil in one for the last race of the season on 7 April 2009. Looks like they are here to stay! More details will be posted in the future events section of the website over the next few weeks.

REGISTRATIONS FROM:          5:30pm onwards at The Chicago Sports Bar, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington

WALKERS/RUNNERS:              5:45pm for all walkers and if you feel you'll run around 26 minutes or more for the 5k race. It is preferred if you start at this time to help keep the race within a manageable time space – I suggest also that it makes for better racing for those runners joining the earlier start time.

RUNNERS' RACE:                     6:00pm for all runners – expecting to run 26 minutes or less
