Wellington Waterfront 5k, Summer Series - Race 18, Queens Wharf, 3 March 2009

Yet another great night weather-wise tonight for the 57 participants. A mild south easterly which made it a good night for PBs and SPBs with 3 LPBs (that I know of) and a massive 25 season PBs. Well done everyone!

Walkers:  Michael Walton again switched his codes and won the Race Walk tonight in an excellent time of 27:05 (around 30 seconds off a LPB I gather). Second placing went to Andrew Shelley who has now strung four sub-30-minute races together in the past month. His time tonight was 28:58. Third place went to Tim Dutton. It was a great night for the men as Tim posted a SPB and sub-30-minute time of 29:50. He has been working steadily towards this and I gather his LPB (5 years or so ago) is in the mid-29-minutes. So it goes to show that with hard work we can all defy the odds for maturing athletes and make improvements when the stats (and our body strength/muscles ) are said to be on the decline and against us. Well done guys! Fastest woman tonight was Frances LeFort who walked an excellent SPB time of 34:00 to win. Second place went to Carol Briesman who recorded her usual solid race time of 36:25 and third place went to Daphne Jones in an improved time of 37:27.

Runners:  With lower numbers again tonight - perhaps the Round the Bays and Gutbuster runs have had an influence here – the field was reasonably spread out by the end of the race. First home was Cameron Goldsmid having his first Waterfront 5k race for the season and recording a good time of 17:21. Having placed 4th in the Round the Bays 7k race behind Rees Buck, Cameron no doubt has better things in store for the upcoming season. Second placing went to Tom Naylor who posted a SPB time of 17:34 and just metres back in third was Tim Rickerby – in 17:37 – not quite able to bridge the gap to second. Hayley Anderson showed further improvement with a SPB time of 20:09 to win the women’s race. I predict the 20 minute barrier will be shattered before the season ends. Go well Hayley! Second place went to Karen Gillespie with 20:50 to go with her similar time last week. Third place went to Dawn Kelly who, according to my records ran a LPB time of 21:15. If I am correct – congrats Dawn!

A big thanks to tonight’s officials – Dan Powell, Bruce Perry, David Lonsdale and Todd Stevens assisted by the Scottish Junior Men – Stefan, Ryan, Jesse and Ben – thanks to all!  Also, it was good to see Emily Solsberg on a three-week return visit from Canada. Emily ran with Scottish in 2005 in her OE year here.

Spot prizes went to: Andrew Brown, Sally Pollard, Geoff Iremonger, Brad Thompson, Neil Price, MaryAnn Moller and young Keller McDonald (courtesy of Colleen Singleton). Keller’s mum Donna was rapt as they will be able to return again to run for free. Perhaps you can turn the tables Donna! J – congratulations to all.

Don’t forget – note down our next 10k option for 17 March 2009 and also pencil in one for the last race of the season on 7 April 2009. Looks like they are here to stay! More details will be posted in the future events section of the website over the next few weeks.

REGISTRATIONS FROM:          5:30pm onwards at The Chicago Sports Bar, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington

WALKERS/RUNNERS:              5:45pm for all walkers and if you feel you'll run around 26 minutes or more for the 5k race. It is preferred if you start at this time to help keep the race within a manageable time space – I suggest also that it makes for better racing for those runners joining the earlier start time.

RUNNERS' RACE:                     6:00pm for all runners – expecting to run 26 minutes or less
