Wellington Waterfront 5k, Summer Series - Race 19, Queens Wharf, 10 March 2009

After two weeks of fine weather, the winds hit us in the form of a strong westerly as it turned about race time. Consequently, PBs and SPBs were not as prevalent – as were the overall numbers. However, there was also the series of “Jackson Street Mile” races on tonight in Petone as well. Anyway, well done to all those who did improve as I would suggest the wind would be worth between 20 (faster runners) and perhaps 30 seconds (for the 20-minutes-plus runners).

Walker:  Tim Dutton was the sole race walker out on the course tonight – but he was not deterred. Instead he posted a PB time of 29:30 – perhaps close to a lifetime best when comparing the course and terrain where his previous best was achieved some time ago. Whatever the situation – it was a great effort by Tim – done all on his own.

Runners:  First home again tonight – two weeks in a row now - was Cameron Goldsmid having a slightly faster time of 17:16 to win this evening. And this is fresh on the back of his win in the Police and Allcomers' Triathlon held over the past weekend at the Pauatahanui Inlet. Great stuff, Cam! Second home was Jason Waite (returning to the Waterfront 5k after a well-earned break) with his time of 17:30 and third place went to Tomas Bridgeman who ran a Lifetime PB of 17:48. Well done, Tomas! The women’s race turned into a cat and mouse duel between two sisters – with Michele Allison showing a paralyzing final spurt to rush past "big sis" Bernie Portenski right on the finish line. Both stopped the clock at 19:27. Third place tonight went to Susan Joy – who also ran a Lifetime PB of 20:54 (improving on last week's time by just one second) but as mentioned earlier – the prevailing winds made it a much bigger achievement than it would appear on paper. Congrats, Susan!

SORRY: I should also apologize to a few people to whom I incorrectly gave the impression that their times were perhaps SPBs or PBs. These times reported below are sadly the correct ones.

A big thanks to tonight’s officials – Bob Stephens, Karl Woodhead and Todd Stevens.

Spot prizes went to: Jodee Webb, Tracey Christensen, Tim Rickerby, Bernie Portenski, Travis Cottreau, Krysia Grant and Letisha Tan. Congratulations to all.

Don’t forget – next week we offer our next Runners' 10k option ie. 17 March 2009 and you should also pencil in one for the last race of the season on 7 April 2009. Looks as if they are here to stay!

REGISTRATIONS FROM:          5:30pm onwards at The Chicago Sports Bar, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington

Start Times: 10k runners expecting to run 50-min plus – Start Time will be 5:30pm – we shall be there a bit earlier to complete registrations, etc. Runners expecting to run sub-50-min – Start time will be 5:45pm

WALKERS/RUNNERS:              5:45pm for all walkers and if you feel you'll run around 26 minutes or more for the 5k race. It is preferred if you start at this time to help keep the race within a manageable time space – I suggest also that it makes for better racing for those runners joining the earlier start time.

RUNNERS' RACE:                     6:00pm for all runners – expecting to run 26 minutes or less
