Wellington Waterfront 5k, Summer Series - Race 21, Queens Wharf, 24 March 2009

Perfect conditions on Wellington ’s Waterfront for the 5k series of races which is all but over for the 2008-2009 season – just 2 weeks left! With a light southerly breeze to run home with, there were an abundance of Lifetime PB’s and Season’s Best performances this evening amongst the 49 competitors.

Walkers:

Tim Dutton made it 3 weeks in a row as he won tonight’s race walk emphatically – but even more satisfying no doubt was that he race walked a lifetime PB shaving a huge 19 seconds of his previous best ever time - the winning time being 29:11. Second home was a disconsolate but sportsmanlike Andrew Shelley (who could just not quite bridge the gap) in a time of 29:18. Third place went to Ian Morton who posted a time consistent with past week’s in 32:17. Not to be outdone, Frances Le Fort also posted a Lifetime PB to win the women’s race, shaving 14 seconds off her previous best time – posted just 7 days ago. Frances walked 33:40 tonight with second placing going to Leanne Palmer in an excellent SPB time of 33:59. Third placing went Andrea Adams in 35:51 (just missing a SPB by mere seconds).

Runners:

First home, and first time participant in the series, was Jamie Stewart who ran a sharp 16:01 to comprehensively take out the men’s race.Jamie is the Oceania Orienteering Champion at the Sprint Distance and also won the Tararua Southern Crossing this year, so running undoubtedly comes naturally to him. Second place went to the ever improving Jason Waite who shaved further time off last week’s effort in posting 16:44 and third went to Andy Bennett in a SPB time of 17:39. Maryann Moller not only won the women’s race tonight but kept up her further improvements to run a Lifetime PB time of 21:39 to win. Congrats Maryann! After taking first placing in the women’s 10k last week, Carla O’Donnell grabbed second over 5k tonight with a SPB time of 23:48, closely followed home by Sorrel Fagan who ran 23:52 for third placing.

We should note some other huge SPB’s tonight (they could even be lifetime PB’s for some – I’m just not sure) with many taking huge chunks of time off their previous bests. Special congrats to:

Rachel McLean, Gavin Sutherland, Al Duffy, Lizzie Cummings, Charlotte Frater, Sally Pollard, Robin Iremonger, Patrick MacKay, Colin Price, John Leonard and Roger Tabone all showing up. In addition, Michael Walton and David Young both ran lifetime PB’s – well done guys!

A big thanks to tonight’s officials – Dan Powell, Todd Stephens plus Bob Stephens and the Scottish Masters Men helpers – Bruce McCallum, Neil Stodart, Adrian Shields, Ray Marten and Don Stevens all pitching in to help.

Spot prizes went to: Andrew Shelley, Michael Walton, Karl Woodhead, Matyas James, Irene Hitchcock, Robin Iremonger and Kate Giorgi. Congratulations to all.

Don’t forget – you should pencil in one more 10k race for the last run of the season on 7 April 2009.

Just 2 more weeks left in the series though.

REGISTRATIONS FROM:          5:30pm onwards at The Chicago Sports Bar, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington

Start Times: 10k runners expecting to run 50-min plus – Start Time will be 5:30pm – we shall be there a bit earlier to complete registrations, etc. Runners expecting to run sub-50-min – Start time will be 5:45pm

WALKERS/RUNNERS:              5:45pm for all walkers and if you feel you'll run around 26 minutes or more for the 5k race. It is preferred if you start at this time to help keep the race within a manageable time space – I suggest also that it makes for better racing for those runners joining the earlier start time.

RUNNERS' RACE:                     6:00pm for all runners – expecting to run 26 minutes or less
