Wellington Waterfront 5k, Summer Series - Race 23, Queens Wharf, 31 March 2009

Winter felt like it was just around the corner tonight as officials and participants alike fronted up to the cool southerly breeze that nipped away at us. But great conditions for Lifetime PBs and season best times as well for the 46 competitors.

Walkers:

Michael Walton roared around the 5k course (no doubt to try and keep warm) just a tad away from his best ever – Michael’s winning time being 26:55. Second place went to Tim Dutton in 29:50 (his 5th sub-30 minute time in as many weeks) and third male home was Ian Morton who improved his time markedly tonight in posting 31:36. Fastest woman was Leanne Palmer, after her no doubt very busy weekend officiating at the National T & F Champs held over the weekend in Wellington. Clipping one second off last week’s time, Leanne walked a time of 33:58. Second place went to Carol Briesman who walked a SPB of nearly 30 seconds to record 35:23 with third place going to Andrea Adams in 35:51 – coincidentally the exact same time for Andrea as last week.

Runners:

Jason Waite stormed around the course tonight to take his first ever 5k win in the race, but in doing so ran a Lifetime Personal Best time of 16 minutes 30 in the process. Congrats Jason! A great time for you to conclude the 2008-2009 season. Second place went to Tomas Bridgeman who also ran a LPB time – 17:28 and third went to Tim Rickerby with a time of 17:51. Not to be outdone by the lads, the gals also made it a trifecta of Lifetime PBs between the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place getters. Susan Joy was first woman home tonight with a PB time of 20:05 – taking a huge chunk of time off and now it would seem just a run or two away from smashing the 20 minute barrier for the first time ever. Well done Susan! Second place went to Maryann Moller with a PB time of 21:37 (yet again shaving a couple of seconds off her previous best) and third place went to Michelle Joy who took an even larger chunk of time off her 5k PB to record a time of 22:21 – a whopping 1m 19 seconds no less!. Very impressive efforts by all.

Overall, we had 6 Lifetime PBs and 11 SPB’s – nearly a third of the entire field. Congrats to all.

A big thanks to tonight’s officials – Dan Powell, David Lonsdale, Todd Stevens, Bob Stephens and the Scottish women’s helpers – Aubrey Begley, Jo Badham and Karen Gillespie.

Spot prizes went to: Lynne Aplin, Tim Rickerby, Dave Colquhoun, Roger Tabone, Colin Young, Jo Badham & Coleen Singleton. Congratulations to all.

Don’t forget – one more 5K & 10k race for the last run of the season on 7 April 2009. That’s next Tuesday – the very last race of the series. No Change to start times despite Daylight Saving changes.

REGISTRATIONS FROM:          5:30pm onwards at The Chicago Sports Bar, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington

Start Times: 10k runners expecting to run 50-min plus – Start Time will be 5:30pm – we shall be there a bit earlier to complete registrations, etc. Runners expecting to run sub-50-min – Start time will be 5:45pm

WALKERS/RUNNERS:              5:45pm for all walkers and if you feel you'll run around 26 minutes or more for the 5k race. It is preferred if you start at this time to help keep the race within a manageable time space – I suggest also that it makes for better racing for those runners joining the earlier start time.

RUNNERS' RACE:                     6:00pm for all runners – expecting to run 26 minutes or less
