Wellington Waterfront 5k, Summer Series - Race 23, Queens Wharf, 7 April 2009

The weather gods certainly did not shine brightly on our last race night of the 2008-2009 season - with blustery norwesterlies blasting the Wellington waterfront tonight. But the show must go on as they say in show-biz – and we did!  50 hardy and dedicated athletes took on the combined three races. There were, however, understandably very few Lifetime PBs or season PBs.

Despite this windy conclusion, it has been a successful season/series of races. In total, 562 individuals have participated over the total of 35 weekly races. The average number each night varied from series to series but the overall average was 64 participants.

To all who have joined us, I wish to thank you for helping make the event the success is it – I especially note the camaraderie that is evident between (initially anyway) strangers who are brought together through one passion – the sport of athletics – running and race walking. We also note that many participants will go on to join various running clubs throughout Wellington and of course we welcome this as it’s a chance for us to showcase our Club – Wellington Scottish Athletics - plus also show that everyone can enjoy the benefits – and that membership is not just for fast elite athletes.

From a Scottish viewpoint, we have a couple more open days with guests welcome to join us for a Saturday Pack Run or Club Race. If you want to see what really happens – come along and join us for a day. Drop me an email if you would like to know more.

Anyway, on to the results for the lucky last.

Walkers: Tim Dutton was our men’s winner yet again after stringing his 7th (I was politely corrected) sub-30-minute effort together over the past two months to record 29:52 – nice walking Tim! Second home was Andrew Shelley who walked 31:12 and Ian Morton took third in another solid effort of 31:50. First woman home tonight saw a return by Robyn McArthur to the series and the winners' list in a time of 31:58. Leanne Palmer was second in just a tick over 34 minutes – 34:02 in actual fact – with third place proving yet again to be a tussle between Andrea Adams and Carol Briesman – with Andrea taking the bronze placing in 36:08 – with Carol just three seconds back.

Runners:

10k Race – 15 runners took to the extreme distance (2 x 5k laps of the northerly winds) with first home going to Cameron Goldsmid in a very impressive time of 34:21. Second placing went to Tomas Bridgeman in 36:59 and third place to Tim Rickerby in 39:01. Fastest woman was Jenny Fildes (also 5th overall) who ran a very respectable time of 47:12. Congrats Jenny! Second placing went to an ex- Welly resident now residing in Australia (running with Sydney Striders) in Kim Pluess. Kim’s time was 49:03. Third woman home was Philippa Hercus who ran a SPB time of 50:41 – taking 2:37 off her previous 10k race time – and that was on a good night! Well done Philippa!

5k Race – 24 runners completed the race with recently crowned 2009 NZ 800m champion Tim Hawkes showing he can win longer distance races also – Tim winning tonight with a SPB time of 17:52. Second placing went to Kevin Pugh (a first-time participant this season) in 18:14 with third, also a first-time participant this season, going to Ramon Steenson in 18:24. Fastest woman was Rebecca Speirs who posted a time of 21:51. Just a few strides back in second place was Claire Corbett who ran 21:54 with third place going to Dawn Kelly in 22:19.

A special congratulations to the only other ‘improver’ tonight – and given the conditions this was a big effort – to Sally Pollard who shaved 35 seconds off her 5k Lifetime Personal Best time. Big Ups, Sally! That secret training really served you well…J J

An especially BIG THANKS to two of tonight’s officials – Dan Powell and Todd Stevens who are invariably on-deck every Tuesday that we are in operation plus Scottish junior men’s runner Corey Casey who fronted up to help out.

Spot prizes went to: Marissa Pritchard, Tim Dutton, David Cooke, Rebecca Speirs, Aenslee Tanner and Kim Pluess. Congratulations to all.

Don’t forget – just four months until the next 5k series commences – mark down Tuesday 4 August 2009 for the re-start.

Enjoy your winter 2009 activities.
