 20th Shoe Clinic Harbour Capital Marathon, Half & 10k, Westpac Stadium, 26 June 2005  

Bleak wintry conditions prevailed. In fact, for the 6.30am and 7.30am marathon starters the wind, cold and rain coupled with morning darkness, the day would have been extremely uninviting. Despite that, total participation numbers across all events was up 50% on last year (this was the first time a marathon has been run), with a total of 3,687 entrants and 3,049 finishers.

All told, we had nearly 90 athletes running or walking (and several others helping out the hosts, the Wellington Marathon Clinic).  It looks as if we had also nearly all our senior women out on the course. Bad weather, what bad weather?  Out on the course, I was particularly touched by the range of encouraging words uttered by a young marshall carrying a large arrow on Kio Bay. 

In the marathon, Grant McLean had a good winning margin over Matt Dravitzki, who was having a 4min/k training run. Grant ran the marathon on light training of 70k per week (Warning, do not try this at home). Grant is therefore the Athletics Wellington Marathon Champion for 2005.

In the half marathon, Mike Wakelin (Olympic) used his superior kick over the last 600m to clear away from fast improving Joseph Bulbulia (WHAC), leaving third place to Craig Kirkwood.  

In the walks, Peter Baillie was second overall in the full and James Hurring and Amelia De Lorenzo were first in the half.

We had several firsts in the age grades: Peter Baillie, Richard Brent, Sally Anderson (who was also WMC's race director), Michele Allison, Pam Graham, Christine Jones, John Hines, Suzanne Cookson, Jenny McDonald, and Helen Willis.
