Wellington Cross Country Championships and 6k and 10k Race Walks, Waikanae, 19 July 2008

Muddy patches, slippery slopes, and waterlogged fields brought a look of delight to Melissa Moon's eyes.  At last, a real cross country course! This was the combined centre champs: Wellington and Manawatu-Wanganui, bolstering the size of the fields on a day when conditions would not otherwise have produced high turnouts. A good test-out of the course and processes for the nationals on 2 August.

In the open women's grade, Melissa Moon was the Wellington champ, followed by fellow masters runners, Gabrielle O'Rourke and Vicky Humphries, both of Wellington Harriers. For the open men, the Wellington champion by a clear margin was Glenn Hughes, with fellow Scottish club mates Rees Buck and Stefan Smith, the runners-up.  For my money, Stefan's race was the pick of the day: running near the front for a couple of laps, he then opened a good gap on chasers Jason Cressingham (WHAC), Mike Wakelin (Hill City, ex-Olympic) and Dan Nixon (WHAC). In the middle laps, he drifted back through the field, suffering from a stitch. This he worked through and clawed his way back to third. A gutsy effort. Another candidate for the run of the day is Ryan Woolley. 27:24 in those conditions is outstanding.

Scottish running results are below the walking results.

Race 1: 10k and 6 k Walking Races: Judges' Decisions

By David Lonsdale

Results of the road walk races (Wellington Walkers Website)

The judges looked at everyone, but while recording infringements they did not write red cards and everyone was able to finish. After the race the judges decisions were collated and the summary of their actions are shown below. Six walkers went through their race without any cautions or red cards. Well done! Eighteen walkers received some form of attention. These varied from as little as one caution to a very risky, but still successful 4 cautions and 2 red cards.

Six walkers would have been disqualified as in addition to receiving cautions they also received three red cards for the one type of infringement, which in all cases was for having a bent knee. For this low-key event some of the judges adopted the view that where a walker had a bent knee and that it remained bent and therefore no advantage was gained from it they did not issue a caution or red card. In a championship event, this would probably not not happen.

So well done to all walkers, firstly for braving the rain, and secondly for trying hard to improve style and as a result speed.
