balance 10k Road Race Walking Series, Race Three, Evans Bay
Parade, 2 September 2006
By David Lonsdale
On a stormy day with wind gusts up to 80kph,
times were naturally slower than in recent races. The 2.5k out and back course
was all on the pavement. It wound its way round a few bays going north from the
Zephyrometer at Cobham Drive lights to just past the old Patent Boat Slip, and return. A
few of the bends gave some protection from the strong wind.
There were 19 starters in this unjudged race.
Peter Baillie continued his dominance of the Wellington
walking scene with a clear win.
Marathon
walker Andrew Shelley who is making great strides in getting his race walking technique right was second after a good battle
with Mark Woodhouse, who is in his first year as a competitive walker. Maria Knott,
another first year walker had a great battle with the consistent Diane Isherwood, and only got clear on the last lap to win
the women’s race.
In the accompanying 5k race, meeting promoter and
manager Bart Jones came home a deserved winner. At the prizegiving,
the main prize of a pair of new balance shoes was awarded to Maria Knott as she was judged to have shown the most
improvement in times and race walking style over the three race series. In total,
62 walkers have taken part in the three races over 10k and 5k.
