Wellington Scottish has a proud history of competitive racing. You’ll see our yellow singlets out in force at local races, and we’re represented at most major races in New Zealand.

Each year, our members compete in the local interclub series of individual and team road and cross-country races and track & field events during the summer. These races are suitable for all runners and have no time limits, though some (such as the hilly Vosseler cross-country race) do require a reasonable level of fitness to complete. Scottish compete each year in a league of three biggest inter-club races, the Wellington Cross-Country Championships, the Wellington 10km road championships and the prestigious Dorne Cup, to determine the club’s best runners for the year.
All racing members are welcome and encouraged to compete in the national championships, which include marathon, half marathon, road racing, cross country, track & field and mountain running.
Top junior, senior and master's runners may be selected to represent Wellington at the New Zealand Road, Cross Country and Track and Field Championships. Several Scottish runners have won national medals in recent years and helped the Wellington centre win medals in all these championships.
Each year, the club travels to the North Island Cross Country Championships in Taupō and to the New Zealand Road Relay Championships, which moves to a different location each year. In recent years, over 100 club members have made the trip to road relays, and the club has been very successful, taking medals in senior and masters grades, as well as winning the prestigious top club trophy in 10 of the last 15 years.
Scottish is a big club and we take pride in supporting each other at competitions around the country. If you are wearing your Scottish singlet – even at an overseas marathon – do not be surprised if a fellow club member spots you from the crowd and yells out ‘Go Scottish!”
With club runs every weekend, our members are some of the best guides if you are looking to explore Wellington’s many walking and running trails. Wellington Scottish members are regular attendees at local Xterra races, the Tarawera Ultra Marathon in Rotorua, and the Kepler Challenge.
Club members feature prominently in the trail running scene both in New Zealand and internationally. After placing third at the 2015 Kepler Challenge, Sam McCutcheon has gone on to win the Ultra Easy 100 in New Zealand and the Buffalo Stampede in Australia as part of the Skyrunning Series. Fiona Hayvice who also came third at the 2015 Kepler Challenge was the 2016 winner of the Tarawera Ultra 100km and has represented New Zealand at the IAU Trail World Championships.
A love of hills and trail running has seen a number of members win Athletics New Zealand Mountain Running titles and go on to represent New Zealand at the World Mountain Running Championships. Two time World Mountain running champion Melissa Moon has inspired many of our members to take their running off-road, and aim for the top!
Wellington Scottish athletes are often seen training on the track at Newtown Park or taking part in organised competitions. We also organise some specific track events.
Our members take part in track meets through the summer season and compete in the Athletics Wellington Centre Champs.

Since 2018, we have organised NZ's biggest annual 10000m track race, with the help of our sponsor, Te Ahumairangi Investments. These races have attracted large fields, including elite athletes.
Our club traditionally organises an event close to Christmas each year, where runners can compete over a one-mile distance. There are seeded races and also open events where members of the public can take part.
